Chapter 267
Waaaaaaaah!
A big match was underway.
The crowd couldn’t contain their excitement as the confrontation between Simon and Raheim, the two special admissions, appeared on the main screen.
The commentator, equally fired up, propped his feet on the table and shouted,
“A massive matchup right at the beginning of the exam! Special Admission No. 8, Raheim, who became the Lord of Snowfield Castle in his teens! And Special Admission No. 1, Simon Follentia, who caused a massive sensation in the second BMAT!”
He turned to Jane.
“Professor Jane! What do you think about this showdown? Coincidentally, these are the two students you said we should be watching in this exam!”
Jane frowned at the commentator’s feet on the table, sighed, and replied,
“For now, Raheim has the upper hand.”
“Oh, is that so! I’d love to hear why!”
“Recently, Simon has shown promise in Katarology and Haematology, but his base is Summonology. And the sea is one of the harshest environments for a summoning major.”
“Indeed! The data backs that up—summoning students are struggling immensely!”
Most Summonology hopefuls had already given up on their summoned creatures and were relying on other forms of black magic to take the exam.
Of course, since it wasn’t their specialty, their competitiveness was greatly reduced. Among the spectators, rumors were already circulating that 30 of the 50 eliminated students would likely be Summonology majors.
“I wonder how Simon plans to overcome the limitations of his discipline! Let’s keep watching!”
* * *
Splash! Splash!
Simon was frantically swimming through the water, cutting through the current. Above him, Raheim hovered in the air, relentlessly hurling snowbomb projectiles.
Boom! Boom!
Waves exploded all around Simon.
‘Tch, I didn’t want to use Deimos already just because of this guy.’
He decided to hold out as long as he could. Simon held his breath and dove underwater.
Glub!
He was swimming away while submerged, but Raheim kept attacking persistently from the air. The projectiles pierced the surface and, seemingly unaffected by the water, surged through rapidly.
‘He’s already prepared for underwater combat.’
Simon quickly swam toward a crowd of students to hide. He figured Raheim would hesitate to attack if too many others were nearby.
But Raheim bombarded not just Simon but everyone around him as well.
Students hit by the snowbombs began sinking deep into the ocean, as though weights had been tied to their legs.
“Gah! What the—?!”
“It's an aerial attack!”
Just then, Simon burst to the surface with a loud gasp and shouted at the top of his lungs,
“That guy’s Raheim!”
“Raheim?”
“If it’s Raheim, he’s the one in first place with all ten coins right now!”
“Take that bastard down first!”
The counterattack from the water began. As curses and dark spells flew at him, Raheim grimaced and put distance between them.
“You damn rat……!”
Meanwhile, Simon had vanished again.
While Raheim was caught up fighting the others…
“Puhahhh!”
Simon had slipped away underwater and climbed up onto another floating platform. Sweeping back his soaked hair, he let out a light sigh.
‘A necromancer who can fight both aerially and at sea? What a pain.’
Just as he finally caught his breath and stood up—
Crash!
Raheim came crashing down from the sky like a comet, landing on the very platform Simon was standing on.
“Why do you keep running?”
As he landed on one corner of the platform, the entire thing tilted heavily in that direction.
“Whoa!”
Simon barely managed to keep his balance by bending his knees.
“We were supposed to duel over Maelyn! Jumon Volendis!”
Simon blinked.
“What? I’m Simon Follentia.”
“Just shut up and take it in.”
Raheim pressed his white swim cap tightly down onto his head and grinned wickedly.
“I’ll make sure you fail this exam, and from now on, Maelyn will only have eyes for me. It doesn’t matter where you run, Jumon Volentona!”
“…Your memory of my name is just getting worse.”
“The only name I need to remember is Maelyn Villene!!”
Raheim pounded his chest.
“In any case! I’ll make sure you’re one of the fifty eliminations. Even if you come back after 30 minutes, I’ll take you down the moment I see you!”
“…Uh, okay.”
“There’s only one way you can keep living in Keyzen!”
A wicked smile spread across his lips.
“Swear it. That you’ll never pine after Maelyn again, and that you’ll never appear before Maelyn or me ever again! Say it in front of all the observers watching right now!”
At this point, Simon genuinely started to feel worried about this Raheim guy.
“…Sorry, but, um, are you maybe… not all there?”
“How dare a mere student mock the Lord of Snowfield Castle!”
Raheim clenched his fists and pulled them to his sides. The platform he stood on groaned and began to tilt again.
He had covered it in Golden Snow.
With the weight shifting to one side, Simon focused his energy, paying close attention to his left foot.
‘Open Gate!’
Shhkrrrrrk!
Shhrrrk!
Six blades fired at once, but Raheim jumped off the platform before they hit.
“I won’t forgive you! Jubon Volendodina!”
‘…I’m just going to ignore the name thing.’
The platform flipped. Simon plunged into the sea, then tried to swim away, but Raheim bombarded the platform with more projectiles.
The platform, now heavy with Golden Snow, became incredibly dense and dragged Simon beneath the surface.
“Guh!”
The downward force was too strong for him to escape.
Simon clenched his fist and gathered Darkness. His hand shimmered with a deep blue glow.
<Hongpeng’s Original: Chwita>
Crash!
As Simon struck with his fist, a large hole opened in the platform, allowing him to slip out through the gap.
He let out a breath of relief as the platform sank rapidly to the ocean floor.
Splash!
But in the distance, Raheim also plunged into the sea. He looked around frantically for Simon, only to be bombarded by coin-hungry students launching simultaneous attacks.
‘Why is he so reckless? Not that I’m complaining.’
While Raheim was distracted fighting the others, Simon leisurely swam toward the surface. He spotted another floating platform and swam toward it.
‘If he chases me again, then I’ll have no choice but to……’
[Boy! Behind you!]
Raheim was ignoring his fight with the other students and was chasing after Simon.
Magic circles beneath his feet kept bubbling, emitting trails of foam.
‘No choice. Feer.’
Things weren’t going exactly according to plan, but there was no helping it.
Simon hardened his resolve and stepped onto the platform.
‘I’m bringing it out.’
[Hehehehehe!]
Darkness surged as Simon leapt into the air. At the same moment, the platform beneath him sank into the sea. Raheim had hit it dead-on with a snowbomb.
As Simon was suspended in midair, Raheim emerged from the water.
Spotting Simon, he shouted,
“This is the end!”
Eight magic circles spread out above Raheim’s body.
The students floating in the water, the audience watching through the main screen—everyone focused on Simon’s next move.
And then, Simon, still in the air, leisurely swept his arm back and tore open space.
—Woooooooooooo!
A thunderous sound reminiscent of a primordial awakening echoed through the world. Eyes widened everywhere. Even Raheim froze.
From the opened subspace emerged—
“A, a monster?”
A massive skeleton of a whale, over five meters in length.
A long skull with upper and lower jaws, a connected cervical spine, followed by the spine stretching from the back to the tail, ending in terrifying fins. Two long pectoral fins extended from its chest, reminiscent of land mammals.
Simon gracefully landed atop it and waved at the dumbfounded Raheim.
SPLAAAAASH!
As Simon and Deimos plunged into the sea, a tidal wave erupted. Raheim staggered from the force.
“Wooooaaahhh!”
“What is that?!”
The students gaped in shock at the sight of Simon riding Deimos.
Riding a skeletal whale, slicing through the sea at breakneck speed, this was the very embodiment of a necromancer’s dream.
[Kahahahaha!! Excellent! I love this!]
Feer shouted in exhilaration at the surge of speed.
A grin appeared on Simon’s lips as well. It was a speed incomparable to swimming with his feet.
Of course, it drew intense attention. Students watching tried launching black magic, but there was no way they could catch up to Deimos.
“You bastard!”
Raheim dove in after him. The magic circles under his feet accelerated, spewing bubbles furiously.
Vmm! Vmm! Vmm! Vmm!
Once again, eight magic circles flared around Raheim, launching Golden Snow projectiles in succession. Underwater, they were equipped with homing capabilities and pursued Deimos.
‘So you wanna play, huh?’
Simon connected to Deimos’s thoughts and accelerated. Deimos began to speed up.
Shhhhhh!
Shooooom!
Deimos sliced through the sea at will, changing directions freely, while Raheim’s projectiles trailed tightly behind. The two of them carved separate trajectories across the ocean in a high-speed chase that left everyone speechless.
“Insane.”
“Are they taking a different exam or something?”
The other students were dumbfounded.
‘Faster. Even faster!’
Simon focused harder, increasing their speed.
Out of the eight projectiles, six couldn’t withstand the water pressure and disintegrated. The remaining two clung on relentlessly. Deimos was nearing the surface, and just above was a floating platform.
‘Now!’
Deimos curved sharply beneath the platform, and the two trailing projectiles smashed into it and exploded.
‘Got it!’
Energized, Deimos burst through the surface and leapt.
—Wooooooooooo!
The friction and collision of the magic circle components produced a sound like an animal’s roar.
Every student floating on the sea turned their eyes to the massive skeletal whale soaring through the air, and to Simon standing on its back.
Reflected by the sunlight, the image was like a masterpiece captured in a famous painting.
“WAAAAAAHHHHH!”
Naturally, the stands on Roke Island erupted.
“Incredible! Absolutely incredible! Once again, he doesn’t disappoint! Simon Follentia, using a skeleton in the sea!!”
The commentator shouted, spitting with excitement. Professor Jane quietly pulled out a handkerchief to wipe the spit off her arm.
“What on earth is that, Professor?! How can a skeleton be so fast in the water?!”
“It’s the offspring Deimos, an 8th-grade threat-level monster, known by the nickname ‘Ruler of the Sea’.”
Jane, of course, knew.
“It’s the only undead that can become the special undead known as the Underworld Whale. I’ve never seen the skeleton version before, though.”
“Ahhh! That explains it! Amazing! He came prepared for underwater combat with something like that!”
As the two spoke, Simon and Deimos descended back toward the ocean floor. Attacks from students targeting Simon didn’t even come close.
The only one still persistently chasing them was Raheim.
Eventually, Raheim spread his arms. Once more, eight magic circles formed around his body.
Simon saw it too and turned Deimos to face Raheim and the nearby students.
‘Let’s show them, Deimos!’
When Simon issued the Absolute Order, Deimos’s jaws opened wide. From within, darkness surged violently, sucking in the surrounding seawater.
Woooooooooooooooo!
‘What the—!’
Raheim faltered. What he saw below him was a blinding image, like the sun rising from the jaws of a massive skeletal whale.
<Current Cannon>
SPLAAAAAAAAAAAAASH!
With a deafening boom, the Current Cannon blasted out from Deimos’s mouth.
The enormous wave of energy made Raheim’s eight projectiles seem insignificant. The spells were pushed back by the overwhelming force, and the core blast reached Raheim.
“…!”
BOOOOOOOOOOOM!
The sea erupted in a massive explosion.
Simon checked the Tongue Pad on his arm. A double-digit number of eliminations had just occurred.
“Yessss!”
Simon clenched his fist, feeling a surge of exhilaration. Deimos, linked to his mind, roared in response with a mighty, thunderous cry.
Superb.
